What is skimming plaster?
Skimming is the process of applying a thin finishing coat over a suitable wall or ceiling background to create a flat, smooth surface for paint or wallpaper. On plasterboard, the skim is not there to level badly fitted boards or correct major hollows. The boards, joints, beads and fixings should already form a sound base. The finishing plaster then closes the surface and gives the plasterer enough working time to flatten and trowel it to the required finish.
A skim coat is different from an undercoat or backing plaster. British Gypsum’s current Thistle selector data specifies BoardFinish and MultiFinish at 2 mm, while BondingCoat and HardWall are thicker levelling products. That distinction matters when buying: a finishing plaster is for the final thin coat; a backing plaster is for building out and levelling a suitable masonry background.
Skimming plaster range comparison
Which one do I need?
For newly fixed standard plasterboard, choose a finishing plaster intended for board. Thistle BoardFinish is the straightforward gypsum option. Breathaplasta Smooth is the alternative where a lime-based, vapour-permeable finish is wanted. On Adaptavate breathable systems, keep the finish compatible with the manufacturer’s build-up rather than mixing products without checking suitability.
For moisture-resistant, fire-resistant or acoustic plasterboard, check the board and plaster manufacturer’s preparation instructions before skimming. Adaptavate specifically requires a bonding primer before its Smooth or Universal products are applied to specialist plasterboards, while conventional ivory-faced gypsum plasterboard does not require that primer in Adaptavate’s system.
For old plaster, first decide whether the existing surface is actually sound. A skim is a finish, not a repair for blown, damp or crumbling material. Loose areas should be dealt with before the finish coat goes on. Smooth or difficult backgrounds may need the bonding or suction-control treatment specified for the chosen plaster.
For solid masonry where thermal improvement is part of the job, Breathaplasta Thermal is the relevant product in this collection. It is not a thin plasterboard skim. Adaptavate specifies it for solid brick, block and stone, followed by a compatible finish such as Breathaplasta Smooth or Universal.
Can you skim straight onto plasterboard?
Yes, standard plasterboard can be skimmed directly with a compatible board finishing plaster when the boards are correctly fixed, clean, dry and ready to receive plaster. The important distinction is the board facing. Standard ivory-faced gypsum plasterboard and specialist boards do not always use the same preparation.
For Breathaplasta Smooth and Universal, Adaptavate states that conventional gypsum plasterboard needs no treatment or primer. Moisture-resistant, fire-resistant and acoustic boards require a bonding primer in its installation system.
Preparation before skimming
A good skim starts with the background. Boards should be secure, with no movement at joints. Screw heads should sit correctly without tearing the paper face. Fit the required angle beads and reinforce plasterboard joints with the specified joint reinforcement where the system calls for it. Remove dust and loose material before mixing.
Existing plaster needs a different check. Tap suspect areas and remove material that is loose or no longer bonded. Deal with the source of damp before covering the surface. Very smooth or high-suction backgrounds may need a bonding agent or suction-control primer, but use the product specified for the plaster rather than treating every surface the same way.
Mixing and application data
Use clean water, a clean mixing bucket and clean tools. Contamination from old setting plaster can shorten usable working time. Mix only the amount that can be applied and finished within the product’s working window. Once a gypsum or lime plaster has started to set, do not try to recover it by adding more water.
Skimming in kitchens and bathrooms
In kitchens and bathrooms, choose the board and complete lining system for the moisture exposure, not simply the skim plaster. A finish coat does not turn standard plasterboard into a waterproof tile backer. Areas exposed to direct or persistent water need the appropriate board, tanking or tiling system specified for that location.
Where specialist moisture-resistant plasterboard is to be skimmed, follow the board and plaster manufacturer’s preparation requirements. For Adaptavate Smooth and Universal, specialist plasterboards such as moisture-resistant boards require a bonding primer. Keep wet-area preparation separate from the final decorating specification.
Frequently asked questions
What is skimming plaster?
Skimming plaster is a thin finishing material applied to a suitable wall or ceiling background to create a smooth surface for decoration. On plasterboard it forms the final trowelled face rather than a structural or levelling layer. British Gypsum specifies its BoardFinish at 2 mm for approved backgrounds.
Can you skim straight onto plasterboard?
Standard plasterboard can receive a compatible finishing plaster directly when it is securely fixed, clean and correctly prepared. Preparation changes with specialist boards. Adaptavate states that conventional ivory-faced gypsum board needs no primer for Smooth or Universal, while moisture-resistant, fire-resistant and acoustic boards require a bonding primer.
Do you need PVA before skimming plasterboard?
Do not assume PVA is required on new plasterboard. Use the preparation specified by the plaster and plasterboard manufacturer. Standard board may be designed to receive the finish directly, while specialist or difficult surfaces can require a particular bonding treatment. An unspecified sealer can change suction and adhesion.
How thick should a plaster skim be?
Thickness is product-specific. British Gypsum specifies Thistle BoardFinish and MultiFinish at 2 mm. Adaptavate Smooth is applied in two thin coats and compressed to an approximately 2 mm finished skim in its current plasterboard installation guidance. Follow the stated thickness rather than building out hollows with finish plaster.
How much does a 25 kg bag of Thistle BoardFinish cover?
British Gypsum states 10 m² coverage per bag when Thistle BoardFinish is applied at 2 mm. Its current selector guide also gives an 11.5 litre water requirement per bag and a minimum setting time of 90 minutes, with setting affected by environmental conditions.
What is Breathaplasta Smooth used for?
Breathaplasta Smooth is Adaptavate’s lime-based fine finishing plaster for internal surfaces. It can be applied to standard plasterboard, used as the finish over compatible Adaptavate plasters and used to overskim suitable existing mineral plaster. A 20 kg bag covers about 12 m² at the recommended skim thickness.
Can Breathaplasta Thermal be used to skim plasterboard?
No. Adaptavate specifies Breathaplasta Thermal for solid masonry walls made from brick, block or stone. It is an insulating base plaster rather than a thin plasterboard finishing skim. Current guidance gives 10–15 mm per hand-applied coat and approximately 2 m² coverage per 9 kg bag at 10 mm.
Can skimming plaster fix an uneven wall?
A finishing skim can remove minor surface imperfections, but it is not intended to correct deep hollows, major steps or an unstable background. Substantial unevenness should be repaired or levelled with the appropriate backing system first. The finish coat can then be applied at the manufacturer’s specified thickness.
Can I use skimming plaster in a bathroom?
Skimming plaster can form part of a bathroom wall or ceiling system, but the complete background must suit the moisture exposure. A skim coat does not waterproof standard plasterboard. Direct wet areas need the appropriate moisture-resistant board, tile backer, tanking and finish specified for the intended use.
