Fermacell

Fermacell is a renowned brand in the construction industry, offering high-performance building materials. Their products, known for their durability and versatility, are ideal for a range of construction and renovation projects. In this category, we explore the different types of Fermacell products available at Insulation4Less, discussing their practical uses and providing guidance on selecting the right product for specific applications.

Choosing gypsum fibreboard for internal projects

Gypsum fibreboard is a practical alternative to conventional paper-faced plasterboard when the job calls for a tougher lining. Its homogeneous construction allows strong mechanical fixings and offers a hard-wearing surface for busy interiors. That does not make it a structural substitute for studs, masonry or a designed floor deck. Specify the complete tested construction, not just the sheet. The manufacturer’s technical literature covers partition assemblies, ceilings, wall linings and particular flooring systems. A wall, ceiling or floor may require different framing, fixings, joints and finishes even when the same board material appears in the specification.

The range currently includes one board listing with two pallet variants and two finishing/jointing accessories. This is useful for trade orders, but less convenient for a small patch repair. Before ordering, measure the net lined area, allow for openings and cutting, check that a pallet quantity is appropriate and confirm unloading arrangements. Fine Surface Treatment and Greenline Joint Stick are separately listed in this collection; check availability before ordering.

Board performance: what the figures actually mean

A dense gypsum-fibre sheet contributes mass and stiffness to a partition, but fire resistance and airborne sound insulation belong to the complete tested construction. Joint treatment, stud type, insulation infill, penetrations and workmanship can change the result. Never describe an individual sheet as providing a particular number of minutes of fire protection or a particular decibel reduction.

Fixings, jointing and decorating

Use fasteners approved for gypsum fibreboard and the relevant timber or metal substructure. Standard plasterboard screws are not automatically interchangeable. The manufacturer explains that its own drywall screw has a head and thread arrangement developed for these boards. A fixing pattern that works on a wall cannot simply be transferred to a ceiling. Check the current installation guide for fastener length, edge distance, centres and jointing method before work begins.

Plan the board layout so joints are staggered rather than forming four-corner cross joints. The manufacturer offers different approved jointing approaches; select the one suited to the board edge and finish. Do not assume ordinary scrim tape and joint compound can replace a specified adhesive-joint system. For a painted finish, prepare and prime the surface as directed by the coating supplier. Fermacell Fine Surface Treatment (12 kg) is separately listed in the collection for suitable finishing applications.

Can you use Fermacell in bathrooms and tile straight onto it?

This is a common source of costly mistakes. Standard gypsum fibreboard can be used in normal domestic conditions, but moisture resistance does not mean permanent waterproofing. Behind a shower or bath, the manufacturer requires suitable waterproofing to the board surface. More demanding wet rooms may call for cement-bonded Powerpanel H₂O, subject to its own system details. Tile adhesive, primer and waterproofing must work together, and the supporting wall must be suitable for the finished load.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fermacell board made from?

Fermacell gypsum fibreboard combines gypsum with cellulose fibres from recycled paper to make a dense, homogeneous sheet. It is used for internal dry lining and selected floor systems. Its composition differs from paper-faced plasterboard, so the recommended cutting, fixing and jointing procedures should be checked against Fermacell’s installation instructions.

Is Fermacell stronger than ordinary plasterboard?

Gypsum fibreboard is designed for demanding internal linings and has useful impact resistance and fixing capacity. Strength comparisons need a defined test, board thickness and installation system. For heavy wall-mounted loads, consult the manufacturer’s fixing tables and assess the complete support arrangement rather than assuming all fixings are safe.

Can Fermacell be used in a bathroom?

Gypsum fibreboard may be suitable for normal domestic bathroom surfaces when the manufacturer’s system conditions are followed. Areas exposed to shower or bath water require an appropriate waterproofing layer. For particularly wet or commercial environments, consider a specified Powerpanel H₂O system instead of relying on moisture resistance alone.

Can you tile directly onto Fermacell?

Compatible tiles can be installed on gypsum fibreboard using the manufacturer’s approved approach. Check adhesive and primer requirements, wall load capacity and the condition of the substrate. In wet zones, a suitable waterproofing system is still required; tile grout and adhesive should not be treated as waterproofing.

Is Fermacell waterproof?

Standard Fermacell gypsum fibreboard is moisture-resistant, not waterproof. It should not be specified for continuous water exposure or an unprotected external wall. Waterproofing in shower and bath areas must be designed as part of the full lining system. Cement-bonded Powerpanel products serve different wet-area applications.

Can Fermacell be used outdoors?

Standard gypsum fibreboard is intended primarily for internal use and should not be used as an exposed external cladding. Fermacell directs customers towards cement-bonded Powerpanel products for suitable outdoor applications. Even with those products, check the approval, supporting structure, weather exposure and finish before installation.

Does Fermacell need plastering?

Gypsum fibreboard can receive a suitable decorated finish without a conventional full skim coat when its joints and surface have been prepared correctly. The finish standard determines how much additional treatment is needed. Use compatible primers, fillers and coatings, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the selected jointing method.

Can you screw directly into Fermacell board?

Fermacell publishes load-bearing guidance for specified screws and cavity fixings in gypsum fibreboard. Permissible loads vary with thickness, fixing type, spacing and wall construction. For heavy cupboards, grab rails or other safety-critical fittings, verify the load path and provide suitable structural support rather than relying on a single fixing.

Is Fermacell fire resistant?

Gypsum fibreboard has a stated reaction-to-fire classification, but a board alone does not deliver a guaranteed fire-resistance period. The minutes required for a wall or ceiling must be demonstrated by the complete tested assembly, including studs, layers, insulation, joints and penetrations. Request the current system evidence for your project.

Does Fermacell improve soundproofing?

The density of gypsum fibreboard can contribute to airborne sound insulation in a designed partition. Actual performance depends on board layers, studs, cavity insulation, seals and flanking paths. Do not apply a laboratory sound rating from one tested assembly to another. Use a complete acoustic system specification for regulated or high-performance work.

What sizes can I buy from this collection?

The current collection lists 1200 × 2400 mm gypsum fibreboard in 12.5 mm and 15 mm pallet variants, plus Fine Surface Treatment (12 kg) and Greenline Joint Stick (310 ml). Confirm the selected thickness, pallet quantity, price and availability on the live product page before placing your order.

How many sheets are on a pallet?

The product selector currently lists 48 sheets for the 12.5 mm option and 40 sheets for the 15 mm option. Both use the same sheet face dimensions. Pallet counts may change with product configuration, so check the exact variant and delivery details rather than using a generic trade-pack assumption.

Can Fermacell be fixed to masonry?

Fermacell’s manufacturer FAQ describes direct bonding of suitable gypsum fibreboard to sound, dry masonry using its specified adhesive system. The background must be sufficiently strong and free from penetrating moisture. This permission does not extend automatically to Powerpanel H₂O or to unstable surfaces such as loose tiles.

What is the difference between 12.5 mm and 15 mm board?

Both listed thicknesses have the same sheet face area, but the 15 mm sheet is heavier and the pallet contains fewer sheets. Select thickness according to the approved wall or ceiling construction and handling requirements. A thicker board alone does not establish an acoustic rating or fire-resistance period.
