Proctor | Proctors
The Proctor category at Insulation4Less offers a comprehensive range of insulation and building solutions, catering to various needs in construction and renovation projects. This overview will group products into relevant categories, explain their uses, and help you select the right product for your specific requirements.
Choosing the right A. Proctor Group product
Proctor makes products for different positions within a building envelope. A vapour control layer belongs in a different part of a wall or roof from an external breather membrane. An air barrier addresses unwanted air movement; insulation addresses heat flow; acoustic battens address the transmission of impact sound through floors. These jobs can overlap, but the products are not interchangeable. Start with the build-up, the intended membrane position and the designer’s condensation strategy. Then check the individual product’s installation guide, compatibility and required accessories.
For retrofit work, consider the existing fabric before selecting a membrane. Solid masonry, timber frame, steel frame and sheathing-board systems dry differently. A detail that works on a new timber-frame wall may trap moisture when copied into an older solid wall. The designer should assess moisture movement and airtightness continuity, particularly around windows, junctions, penetrations and services.

A straightforward purchasing check is to identify whether the specification calls for an AVCL, a breather membrane, an external air barrier or an insulation layer. Match that function first. A similar-looking roll may have a completely different vapour resistance or permitted exposure. For façades, confirm the cladding joint geometry and the fire strategy before ordering. For a floor, confirm the full tested acoustic build-up, not merely the batten name.
Comparing Procheck vapour control layers
Procheck products are installed to manage moisture vapour and, where specified, air leakage from the occupied side of a construction. They are not substitutes for a breather membrane on the outer face. The reinforced Procheck options provide a choice of membrane grades, while Procheck Adapt has variable vapour permeability. This matters in constructions where controlled inward drying is part of the design. Do not select a grade from its number alone; compare the current declared performance data and approved junction details.
| Product | Listed roll | Gross roll area | Buying consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Procheck VCL 125 | 2m × 50m | 100m² | Entry listed VCL option |
| Procheck Standard 300 | 2m × 50m | 100m² | Reinforced VCL option |
| Procheck Premier 500 | 2m × 50m | 100m² | Higher-grade reinforced option |
| Profoil 861 | 2m × 50m | 100m² | Foil-faced vapour control product |
| Procheck Adapt | 1.5m × 50m | 75m² | Humidity-responsive control layer |
Roll area is width multiplied by length before laps, trimming and detailing. Actual covered area will be lower. Set out the laps to the manufacturer’s current instructions and include wastage around openings. Airtightness relies on a continuous sealed layer: membrane alone will not close gaps at joists, window reveals or service penetrations. Use tapes and sealants confirmed compatible with the chosen substrate and membrane.
Can an airtight membrane also be breathable?
Yes. Airtightness and vapour permeability describe different kinds of movement. Airtightness restricts bulk air leakage through joints and surfaces; vapour permeability describes diffusion of water vapour through a material. An external vapour-permeable air barrier can therefore reduce draughts while allowing a designed route for drying. It does not remove the need for a moisture assessment, suitable weather protection or correctly sealed laps. This distinction is particularly important when comparing Wraptite with an internal Procheck VCL.
A common specification error is to assume that a vapour-open external membrane can replace an internal vapour control layer. They serve different positions and functions. Conversely, installing a highly resistant layer on the wrong side may limit drying. Use the latest BS 5250 moisture-management principles and project-specific assessment, with dynamic modelling where appropriate. Procheck Adapt may be considered when a variable-permeability approach is specified, but its suitability must be checked for the particular wall or roof.
Ordering, measuring and installation checks
For membranes, measure the total surface area, add allowance for overlaps and junctions, and order the correct tape, corners and liquid flashing where specified. For boards, plan around the sheet module and reveal widths. Check that the chosen membrane is compatible with sheathing, primers and adhesives. Store materials in accordance with manufacturer instructions and protect exposed substrates from contamination before bonding. A well-specified membrane can still fail at the junction if it is left unsealed.
For floor battens, use the complete specified acoustic assembly, including perimeter isolation and any resilient layers. Do not screw through an isolation detail unless the system allows it. For insulated wallboards, check fixing substrate, vapour control continuity and how services will be accommodated. Where the wall is damp, identify and resolve the moisture source before adding internal insulation. Obtain the current manufacturer’s installation instructions for the exact SKU.
Frequently asked questions
What does A. Proctor Group manufacture?
- Proctor Group supplies construction membranes, air and vapour control layers, specialist thermal insulation and acoustic floor products. The range covers different building-envelope functions, so the correct product is chosen by application rather than brand alone. Check the current datasheet and intended wall, roof or floor build-up before ordering.
What is the difference between a breather membrane and a vapour control layer?
A breather membrane is commonly positioned towards the external side of a wall or roof to provide weather protection while allowing vapour diffusion. A vapour control layer is normally designed into the warmer side to manage moisture movement from inside. The correct arrangement depends on the full construction and condensation assessment.
Is Wraptite a vapour barrier?
Wraptite is described by A. Proctor Group as a vapour-permeable, self-adhesive air barrier, not a conventional high-resistance internal vapour barrier. Its role is to help control external air leakage while supporting a designed drying path. Use the manufacturer’s detailing guidance and do not substitute it for an internal VCL without design approval.
What is Procheck Adapt used for?
Procheck Adapt is a variable-permeability vapour control layer for suitable wall and roof constructions. The manufacturer explains that its vapour resistance changes with humidity to support moisture control and drying. It also contributes to airtightness when correctly detailed. Its use should follow a project-specific moisture strategy, not a generic rule.
Can Facadeshield UV be used behind open-jointed cladding?
Facadeshield UV is specifically designed for use behind open-jointed rainscreen cladding, where the membrane may receive ultraviolet exposure through the joints. Confirm the manufacturer’s limitations for joint width, open area, exposure and installation, together with the façade fire strategy. Ordinary breather membranes should not automatically replace a specified UV-resistant product.
Is an airtight membrane the same as an impermeable membrane?
No. An airtight membrane restricts the movement of air through the building envelope. A vapour-permeable membrane can still allow water vapour to diffuse through it. These properties are measured differently and must not be confused. A continuous airtightness strategy also requires sealed junctions, penetrations and transitions between materials.
Can Spacetherm be used around window reveals?
Spacetherm aerogel products can be considered for thin insulation details such as window reveals and thermal bridges where space is restricted. The suitable format depends on the substrate, fixing method, moisture strategy and fire requirements. Check the exact product variant because blanket and laminated wallboard specifications are not interchangeable.
Does every Spacetherm product have the same thermal conductivity?
No. A. Proctor Group publishes different performance information for different Spacetherm products, including the general Spacetherm range and Spacetherm A1. Use the declared conductivity on the datasheet for the exact item being specified. Thermal resistance relates to the individual layer, while a U-value describes the complete construction.
Is Spacetherm A1 fire rated?
The manufacturer identifies A1 reaction-to-fire classification for specified Spacetherm A1 products and tested laminated configurations. This does not mean every Spacetherm composite, facing or installation automatically has the same classification. Confirm the current classification report and the precise product build-up against the project fire requirements before specifying.
How much area does a Procheck roll cover?
A listed 2m × 50m Procheck roll has a gross material area of 100m²; the listed 1.5m × 50m Procheck Adapt roll has 75m² gross. Usable installed coverage is lower once laps, trimming and detailing are included. Calculate quantities from the installation guide rather than ordering to gross area alone.
Do I need special tape for Proctor membranes?
Airtight and vapour-control installations normally require compatible joint tapes and detailing accessories. The correct choice depends on the membrane, substrate and junction. Wraptite detailing tape, corners and liquid flashing are listed within the range, but they should only be used in approved combinations. Follow the relevant manufacturer instructions.
Can I use a Proctor membrane on a refurbishment project?
Proctor membranes can be considered in refurbishment where the construction, moisture movement and substrate condition have been assessed. Older solid walls and altered roof build-ups may have limited drying routes. Confirm the existing materials, repair water ingress first and select a system supported by the designer’s condensation and airtightness strategy.
