Exploring the world of VELUX Flashings at Insulation4Less guides homeowners and builders over an array of premium quality, versatile, and durable flashing solutions designed to be compatible with an extensive range of roofing materials. Known for its durability, weather resistance, and impressive performance, VELUX flashing kits become a vital part in facilitating a watertight seal between roofing windows and materials. Let's explore the realm of possibilities within the VELUX Flashings category, weaving through the product options available without deep-diving into individual products.

Which VELUX flashing do I need?

Start with the roof covering, not the window colour or glazing specification. A flashing is a formed drainage system: its side pieces, head section and apron must work with the profile and overlap of the roof covering. EDL is the usual standard-height choice for compatible natural slate. EDW is the standard-height choice for many profiled tiles and suitable interlocking coverings. A plain tile, standing-seam metal roof, very low pitch or recessed installation may require a different VELUX family that is not listed in this collection.

Next, read the identification plate on the open roof-window sash. Match the complete size code, such as CK02 or MK04, to the size option on the product page. A flashing described as “all sizes” is not one universal item: it means multiple selectable variants. Check the window generation and any unusual installation arrangement before ordering.

Tile Velux Flashing Kits

VELUX EDW Pro+ Single 120mm Tile Flashing Kit

Tile Flashing Kits, such as the VELUX EDW Pro+ Single Tile Flashing, cater to those with tiled roofing materials. These are meticulously designed to be compatible with various tile profiles and sizes, ensuring a snug, watertight seal around your VELUX window, mitigating water leakage and enhancing weather resistance. The VELUX EDW Pro+ is aptly crafted to accommodate roofing tiles up to 120mm in profile and is available in diverse sizes, which ensures that it works harmoniously with your specific VELUX window and roof type.

Slate Velux Flashing Kits

VELUX EDL Pro+ Single Slate Flashing Kit

When working with slate roofing, employing a dedicated slate flashing kit like the VELUX EDL Pro+ is crucial. These flashings seamlessly interweave with the slates, ensuring that the window integrates impeccably without disrupting the aesthetic or functionality of the roof. Adaptable to various slate sizes, the VELUX EDL Pro+ brings to the table a finely tuned, low-profile installation that maintains the sleek appearance of slate roofs while safeguarding against weather elements.

Flexwrap Tape

Tyvek Flexwrap Tape 150mm x 23m

In addition to the flashing kits, products like the Tyvek Flexwrap Tape provide an extra layer of assurance against potential water ingress and air leakage. The Flexwrap Tape excels in providing a flexible, durable, and impenetrable seal around the window frame, ensuring that every nook and cranny is impermeable to water and air. With its impressive adaptability, it can be moulded around corners and awkward shapes, reinforcing the seal and enhancing energy efficiency.

EDW tile flashing versus EDL slate flashing

These two kits solve different roofing details. EDW uses an apron and formed components intended to work around the contours of profiled roofing. EDL uses side soakers for appropriate slate courses. Neither kit should be chosen solely because it appears close in price. A mismatched roof covering can prevent correct laps and drainage, even when the flashing physically fits around the window frame.

Can you fit a VELUX flashing to any roof covering?

No. This is the key buying mistake. “Tile” does not mean every tiled roof uses EDW, and “slate” does not mean every slate-like product uses EDL. Plain tiles, interlocking slate, shingles, metal sheet profiles and recessed installations can need different details. VELUX publishes separate flashing families for flat roofing materials, plain tiles, metal roofs and other specialist applications. Check the roofing material, profile height, pitch, window model and installation height as one system.

If your roof has a non-standard covering, do not cut, flatten or force a standard apron to make it fit. Ask the roof-covering supplier and VELUX for a confirmed installation detail. This matters particularly on conservation work, standing-seam metal roofs and roofs near the lower pitch limit.

What comes with the flashing and what else may be needed?

A flashing kit is the external weathering interface, not the roof window itself. VELUX confirms that the EDW 2000 and EDL 2000 Pro+ sets include both the BFX underfelt collar and BDX insulation collar. BFX connects the window to the roof underlay and includes a drainage gutter. BDX insulates around the frame. The separate BBX vapour barrier collar provides an internal vapour and airtightness detail where specified. Check the selected variant code and instructions before fitting. Source: VELUX UK EDW and EDL technical product pages.

The BFX underfelt collar connects the roofing underlay to the window area and manages incidental water beneath the covering. The BDX insulation collar helps reduce heat loss around the frame. Internal vapour control must be detailed to suit the roof build-up, using an appropriate system such as the VELUX BBX collar where specified. Tyvek FlexWrap tape is a separate flexible detailing product listed in this collection; it is not a replacement for formed VELUX flashing components.

Ordering and fitting checklist

Before lifting tiles or slate, check the window plate, the measured roof pitch, roof covering thickness or profile, installation height and surrounding rafters. Confirm that the opening and required clearances follow the exact VELUX fitting instructions. During installation, work through the specified sequence for the bottom apron, side pieces and head flashing. Maintain correct drainage paths and overlaps, and avoid driving fixings through areas the manufacturer intends to shed water.

After installation, inspect the head of the window for debris traps and check that the roofing material sits correctly around the flashing. A visible gap does not always indicate a leak, but bent side channels, missing soakers or incorrect tile cuts should be addressed before internal finishes are closed. Use a competent roofer where access, roof condition or fall risk makes the work hazardous.

Frequently asked questions

What is a VELUX flashing kit?

A VELUX flashing kit is a set of formed weathering components fitted around a roof window where it meets the roof covering. It channels rainwater around the frame and back onto the tiles or slate. The correct kit is selected by roof material, window size and installation type.

Do I need flashing for a VELUX roof window?

A pitched-roof VELUX window normally requires a compatible flashing system to form the weathering connection to the roof covering. The window alone does not provide the full external junction. Choose the flashing specified for the roof covering and window, and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

What is the difference between EDL and EDW?

EDL is a standard installation flashing intended for suitable non-interlocking slate, while EDW is intended for profiled roofing materials, including many roof tiles. Their water-shedding details are different. Check the slate thickness or tile profile and the exact VELUX window size before choosing either kit.

Can I use EDW flashing on a slate roof?

EDW can suit certain interlocking slate and other profiled coverings, but it is not automatically the right choice for traditional non-interlocking slate. VELUX identifies EDL for suitable standard slate applications. Confirm the exact roofing product and its overlap arrangement before ordering a flashing.

What roof pitch is suitable for EDL flashing?

The VELUX UK roofing-material guide gives a 15°–90° roof pitch range for standard EDL slate flashing. That figure does not remove the need to check the particular roof-window model, slate specification and installation instructions. Low-pitch or unusual roof details may require a different approved solution.

What roof pitch is suitable for EDW flashing?

The VELUX UK roofing-material guide lists 15°–90° for standard EDW flashing. EDW is intended for compatible profiled roofing materials, with the published family covering profiles up to 120 mm. Confirm the actual tile profile and the instructions supplied for the exact window and flashing combination.

How do I find my VELUX window size?

Open the roof-window sash and look for its identification plate. Record the complete size code, such as CK04 or MK08, together with the model information. Choose the same code in the flashing product’s size selector. Measuring the internal plaster opening is not a reliable substitute.

Are VELUX flashing kits universal?

VELUX flashing kits are not universal. Different families suit slate, profiled tiles, plain tiles, specialist metal coverings and recessed installations. Each also needs a matching window size or combination configuration. A kit may be offered in many size variants, but one physical kit does not fit every window.

Can I reuse an old VELUX flashing?

Reusing an old flashing is not a safe default when replacing a roof window. Components can be damaged during removal, and compatibility may change with window generation or roof-covering details. Check VELUX replacement guidance and the condition of every weathering component before deciding whether reuse is permitted.

Does a VELUX flashing kit include the window?

The flashing kit and roof window are separate products unless a specific listing expressly says otherwise. A flashing provides the junction to the roof covering; the window supplies the frame, sash and glazing. Confirm the exact contents of any Pro+ package and whether collars or other accessories are included.

Can I fit VELUX flashing on a flat roof?

Standard EDL and EDW pitched-roof flashing kits are not flat-roof installation systems. Flat roofs require a suitable window and purpose-designed installation arrangement for that roof construction. Check the roof pitch and the manufacturer’s approved flat-roof products rather than adapting a pitched-roof flashing with sealant.

Why is my VELUX window leaking after installation?

Water ingress can arise from damaged roof coverings, blocked drainage paths, missing flashing components, incorrect laps or an unsuitable kit. Condensation can also be mistaken for a roof leak. Inspect the source safely and compare the installation against VELUX instructions before replacing parts or applying sealant.

Is flashing tape a substitute for a VELUX kit?

Flexible sealing tape can help detail selected junctions where its manufacturer permits, but it does not replace the formed apron, soakers and drainage channels of a roof-window flashing. Use the approved VELUX system for external weathering, and select additional tapes according to the underlay and airtightness design.
