Insulated Plasterboard
Insulated plasterboard is a commonly used building material, which consists of a sheet of standard plasterboard or gypsum board, and a sheet of insulating material sandwiched together into a single sheet.
It is available in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, with a choice of finish and material used for the Insulation . Thermal plasterboards are mainly used on internal walls, to enhance the thermal performance without adding too much depth to the wall. They are also useful in roofs when it comes to flat roof windows or pitched roof windows.
It can be fixed with plasterboard nails, screws or even adhesive, making it an easier option for some DIY tasks.
What is Insulated Plasterboard?
Insulated plasterboard comprises standard drywall plasterboard pre-bonded to an insulant. The different thicknesses of plasterboard are used depending on the grade of insulation bonded to it.
Types of board you need to know
Standard insulated plasterboard
A standard insulated plasterboard comprises standard Drywall Plasterboard pre-bonded to insulation.
Tapered edge plasterboard
A vapour control layer helps you protect your building from the consequences of condensation. Condensation is formed when warm moist air rises and condenses into a liquid on contact with the colder surfaces above the insulation.
The boards are tightly butted together, the tapered edges of the plasterboard are sealed with scrim tape and jointing compound to form an effective vapour control layer with a high vapour resistance.
Moisture Resistant Insulated Plasterboard
Moisture resistant Insulated Plasterboard is backed with rigid polyisocyanurate foam and two vapour barriers which are specially designed to use in wall linens and internal wall partitions. These boards are mostly used where both high thermal performance and high moisture resistance is required.
High Performance Insulated Plasterboard
High-performance insulated plasterboard is normally a sheet of 9-13mm gypsum board, backed with high-density phenolic foam. It will normally also include at least one vapour-control layer.
Benefits of Insulated Plasterboard?
- The ability to install quickly as its a two in one solution is a huge advantage
- Installing it brings a whole host of benefits to your home.
- Thermal plasterboard or Insulated Plasterboard is one of the most cost-effective insulation methods in comparison to other insulation products.
- Future costs will be kept down due to the energy efficiency of Insulated Plasterboard.
- Heating bills are low due to the thermal insulation board having a high-level moral resistance.
- This means your home will be kept cool in the warm summer months and warm during the cold winter months.
- East to handle and Install
- All Insulated plasterboards are CFC, HCFC and Formaldehyde Free
- They have excellent moisture resistant capacity
What is the thickness of Insulated Plasterboard?
Insulated plasterboards vary in thickness and they start from 22 mm to 72.5mm.
How to cut insulated plasterboard?
The layer of insulation on the back of the plasterboard can make cutting the sheet to size a bit more complicated than with normal plasterboard. The best way to cut an Insulated Plasterboard is with a very sharp knife which can cut through the insulation including the paper backing on the plasterboard.
How to Install Insulated plasterboard?
Does Foil Backed Insulation Stops Damps?
Foil Backed Plasterboard utilises a thin foil backing to provide excellent vapour resistance. The foil acts as a powerful barrier that limits moisture diffusion and prevents creeping damp. This makes it ideal for use in roofs, decks and walls.
What is Insulated Plasterboard Used For?
Insulated plasterboard is used to line Internal walls , usually, brick walls when both insulation and dry-lining is needed.
Insulated plasterboard is cheaper and quicker to install than the traditional dry-lining or insulation method and can be a cheaper solution to using foil-backed plasterboard and a layer of traditional insulation material.
Best Insulated Plasterboard Brands we have
Celotex Insulated Plasterboards
Celotex PL4000’s make up the Celotex insulation plasterboard range. The Celotex PL board has the premium PIR foam backing and also have high-performance grade insulation backing.
Ecotherm Insulated Plasterboard
The Ecotherm Eco-Liner is suitable for solid wall insulation and redesigning existing buildings to higher thermal performance. It consists of a PIR foam core with tapered edge plasterboard that can adhere using gypsum adhesive. It is very suitable for providing dry lining insulation to walls or existing buildings.
Gyproc British Insulated Plasterboard
Gyproc Thermaline Basic (EPS), Thermaline Plus (XPS) and Thermaline Super (Phenolic) Plasterboards - comprise gypsum board bonded to expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene, and phenolic foam respectively. Only the ThermaLine Super Boards incorporate a vapour control layer.
Kingspan Insulated Plasterboards
Kingspan insulation used to make two different pre-insulated plasterboards. One was for mechanical fixing only which was Kingspan Kooltherm K18 and Kooltherm K17 was for Dot and Dab. Both of these boards have been replaced by Kingspan’s new lower lambda plasterboard bonded to insulation Kooltherm K118.
Kingspan Kooltherm K118 Insulated Plasterboard is a premium performance, lower lambda internal wall insulation, with a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core. It has a 12.5mm plasterboard bonded to its front surface and a composite foil based facing on its reverse surface. It is suitable for mechanically fixed or plaster dab / adhesive bonded dry-lining.
Warm Line Insulated Plasterboards
Warmline high performance insulated plasterboards offer a single-step application solution, which improves thermal efficiency in both walls and roof applications. These combination boards can be mechanically fixed, or by a traditional dot and dab methods, and are fully compliant with Part L building regulations.
Ikoustic Soundproof Insulated Plasterboards
Ikoustic MuteFoam Self-adhesive Acoustic foam and Soundproof Plasterboard provides you with a slim and practical solution for the reduction of ambient noise levels that is suitable for the tight, challenging space on both walls and ceilings
It can be fitted to clean, smooth surfaces and incurved, awkward areas. Additional mechanical fixings such as pins may be required if the panelling is affixed to the ceiling.
The Best systems from Insulation4less.co.uk
The Eurothane PL comes with a rigid polyisocyanurate foam core that is free of harmful CFCs and HCFCs. This helps the insulant in zero contribution to global warming and ozone depletion. It comes faced on both the sides with a multi-layered coating of aluminium foil with plasterboard bonding on one of its sides. It comes with an extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK. It is mostly used for wall applications.
Recticel Eurothane PL insulated Plasterboard from Insulation4less.co.uk
The Recticel Eurothane PL insulated Plasterboard is a rigid thermal insulation system available in a closed-cell consisting of CFC and HCFC-free zero ozone layer depletion potential. It comes with a Polyisocyanurate (PIR) core faced on each of the sides of the board with a bright, multi-layered complex of kraft, gas-tight and multi-layered complex. It comes with a very low thermal conductivity of 0.22W/m. The manufacturing of the boards is done to BS EN 13165 by Recticel insulation.
Application of Recticel Eurothane PL insulated Plasterboard:
The Eurothane PL plasterboards is a high-performance PIR foam which can be used in pitched roofing, flooring and framed wall application. These are rot-proof, maintenance-free and durable. The boards are tough, resilient and light-weight. They can be easily altered and cut using a fine-toothed saw or knife. It completely meets the appropriate building regulation standard with any type of pitched roof construction.
Features:
- It is Suitable for dot & dab and mechanical fix application
- It is perfectly ideal for refurbishment work
- The boards are rot proof, durable and maintenance free
