Cement Boards | Cement Board

Explore an exceptional range of cement boards at insulation4less, featuring products from renowned vendors like EUROFORM, ACUPHON, CEMBLOC, QUIETSTONE, and more. Cement boards are typically utilised in building and construction due to their durability, resistance to moisture, fire, and impact, providing superior quality and ensuring the longevity of your build.

Choosing a Cement Board by Job

Start with the application rather than the thickness. A tile backer, external sheathing board, cement-bonded particle board and structural dry floorboard can all contain cement, but they are not interchangeable. Check the manufacturer’s declared use, supporting structure, fixing pattern and finishing system before ordering.

Job Product to consider Why
Bathroom or kitchen tile backing Euroform Easyboard 12.5mm fibre-cement board intended for high-moisture tile backing; A1 reaction to fire.
SFS / timber-frame external sheathing Versaroc MPA1 or Cembloc CemPlate Both are designed as external sheathing/carrier boards; Versaroc is A1 and Category A to EN 12467.
General internal/external board Euroform Versapanel Cement-bonded particle board to EN 634 for dry, humid and exterior conditions.
Dry floor spanning joists Cembloc DryBloc TG4/22 22mm tongue-and-groove cement fibre floorboard; manufacturer recommends 22mm for spans above 450mm up to 600mm.
Render carrier Cembloc CemPlate Manufacturer identifies CemPlate as an external carrier/render board in 6mm, 9mm and 12mm.

It balances durability with performance, making it an apt choice for external cladding, fire protection, and acoustic control. Utilise them in projects that necessitate a balance between protective build and aesthetic appeals, like contemporary residential and commercial spaces.

What Is the Difference Between Fibre Cement and Cement-Bonded Particle Board?

Fibre cement boards use cement with reinforcing fibres or mineral reinforcement to create a stable sheet. Products such as Versaroc MPA1, CemPlate and Easyboard sit in this family. Cement-bonded particle board uses wood particles bonded with cement. Versapanel is the example in the current range. The distinction matters because the boards have different standards, fire classifications, weights and intended systems.

For external cladding or sheathing, do not choose by the words “cement board” alone. Check whether the exact board is approved behind the proposed render, rainscreen or cladding system. For tiling, use a board that the manufacturer declares for tile backing and follow the adhesive, jointing and waterproofing requirements for the wet-area build-up.

Current Board Sizes and Verified Weights

Board Thickness Sheet size Verified weight Source
Versaroc MPA1 9mm 2400 x 1200mm 35kg per sheet Euroform Versaroc technical data
Versaroc MPA1 12mm 2400 x 1200mm 47kg per sheet Euroform Versaroc technical data
Cembloc CemPlate 9mm 2400 x 1200mm 35.0kg per sheet Cembloc
Cembloc CemPlate 12mm 2400 x 1200mm 46.7kg per sheet Cembloc
Cembloc DryBloc TG4/22 22mm 1200 x 600mm 21.38kg per sheet Cembloc

Which One Do I Need?

For a tiled wall in a bathroom or kitchen, Easyboard is the most directly matched product in this collection because Euroform declares it for tile backing in high-moisture areas. It is a 12.5mm exterior-grade fibre cement board with A1 reaction to fire under EN 13501-1.

For external SFS or timber-frame sheathing, compare Versaroc MPA1 with CemPlate. Euroform declares Versaroc MPA1 as a Category A fibre cement sheet to EN 12467 and A1 non-combustible. Cembloc positions CemPlate as a weather-resistant external carrier board and render carrier, with 9mm and 12mm sheets currently listed here.

For a cement-bonded particle board rather than fibre cement, choose Versapanel where its declared EN 634 performance suits the specification. For a dry floor that needs to span joists, use the dedicated DryBloc TG4 system rather than substituting a sheathing or tile-backer sheet.

Is Cement Board Fully Waterproof?

No single answer applies to every cement board. Cement-based boards are generally much more moisture tolerant than standard gypsum plasterboard or untreated timber sheets, but moisture resistance does not automatically make a finished wall or floor waterproof. The board’s declared exposure class and the complete installed system matter.

In a shower or wet room, follow the board manufacturer and tiling-system supplier on tanking, joints, corners, penetrations and compatible adhesives. A moisture-tolerant backing board can remain dimensionally stable when exposed to damp conditions while the tiled assembly still needs waterproof detailing. For external work, use only boards declared for that exposure and protect the façade in accordance with the specified cladding or render system.

Cutting, Fixing and Finishing

Use the method specified for the exact board. Easyboard is designed as a score-and-snap board and Euroform states that it can be fixed with self-wing drilling screws. Heavier fibre-cement sheets may require powered cutting with suitable dust extraction and the correct blade. Follow the current product data sheet for edge distances, centres, framing and joint treatment.

Do not copy a fixing schedule from another cement sheet simply because the thickness is similar. Fastener type and spacing depend on the substrate, board, wind load, fire system and whether the sheet is being used internally, externally, on a wall or on a floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cement board used for?

Cement board is used where a robust sheet material is needed for tile backing, external sheathing, render carrying, flooring or other demanding construction details. The correct use depends on the product. Easyboard targets tile backing, Versaroc and CemPlate target sheathing, while DryBloc TG4 is a dedicated dry floorboard.

What are the downsides of cement board?

Cement-based sheets are usually heavier and harder to handle than standard plasterboard, and some types need specialist cutting, dust control and fixings. A 12mm Versaroc 2400 x 1200mm sheet is approximately 47kg according to Euroform, so handling and supporting-frame requirements need planning before installation.

Is cement board fully waterproof?

Cement board should not automatically be treated as a waterproofing layer. Many products tolerate moisture and exterior exposure, but the complete wall or floor still needs the joints, penetrations, membranes, tanking, cladding or render required by its specified system. Always follow the exact board manufacturer’s installation guidance.

Is cement board better than plywood?

Cement board is usually preferred where moisture, fire or dimensional stability drives the specification, while plywood can be easier to cut, lighter and useful where timber-based structural performance is required. Neither is universally better. Compare the declared application, loading, exposure, fire requirement and finish before choosing the sheet material.

Is cement board fireproof?

Some cement boards in this range have an A1 reaction-to-fire classification, including Easyboard, Versaroc MPA1 and Cembloc products listed as A1. That does not mean a single sheet provides a complete fire-resistant wall or floor. Required fire resistance must be demonstrated by the complete tested or assessed construction.

What thickness of cement board should I use?

Choose thickness from the manufacturer’s intended application and system specification, not from a generic rule. This collection currently includes 9mm and 12mm sheathing options, 12.5mm Easyboard and 22mm DryBloc TG4. Floor spans, framing centres, fire requirements and finish can all change the required board.

Can you tile directly onto cement board?

Tile backing is a declared use for products such as Euroform Easyboard, but the preparation still has to follow the board and adhesive manufacturers’ instructions. Check joint treatment, primers, waterproofing or tanking, tile weight limits and adhesive compatibility. Exterior sheathing boards should not automatically be treated as interchangeable tile backers.

What is the difference between cement board and plasterboard?

Plasterboard is a gypsum-based lining widely used for dry internal walls and ceilings. Cement-based boards are generally denser and are selected for demanding moisture, impact, exterior, tile-backing or fire applications where the specific product is approved. They are heavier, and cutting, fixing and jointing methods can differ significantly.

Can cement board be fixed to timber studs?

Some cement boards can be fixed to timber framing, but the permitted framing, centres, fasteners and edge distances are product-specific. CemPlate is intended for timber-frame as well as SFS applications. Use the current technical data and system specification rather than applying a plasterboard screw pattern to a cement sheet.
